New Year's Resolutions for Improving Your Smile

At the beginning of a new year, most people make resolutions. The most common ones involve fitness and wellness, but have you ever made a goal about your oral health? This year, consider setting some New Year’s resolutions for improving your smile.  Here are some ideas:

Eat Healthier

What you eat impacts your overall health, including the health of your teeth and gums. Eating more nutrient-rich foods like vegetables help your teeth stay strong and healthy. Diets heavy in food like refined carbs and sugar can lead to tooth decay. If you’re already resolving to eat better this year, know that you’ll be helping out your oral health, as well.

Don’t Use Tobacco Products

If you smoke or use other tobacco products, breaking the habit is one of the best things you can do for your oral health. Tobacco not only stains your teeth; it can lead to serious problems like gum disease and oral cancer. If you currently don’t have a tobacco habit, don’t start.

Improve Your Oral Health Routine

Maintaining good oral care at home is essential for the health of your teeth and your whole body. While pretty much everybody knows the importance of brushing, it’s easy to get apathetic about it. Resolve to brush at least twice a day for a full 2 minutes each time with a soft-bristled toothbrush. You can also significantly improve your oral health by committing to flossing once a day. Set yourself a reminder until it becomes a habit.

Think About Teeth Whitening

Many people wish their smiles were whiter. While improving your oral health habits can help, teeth whitening gives a more dramatic result. There are lots of methods out there, including DIY ones that are risky. Talk to Dr. Johnson to figure out which is best for you based on the results you want and your budget. We offer whitening toothpaste, at-home teeth whitening, and professional in-office whitening.
